The Monster Workshop
Audience: Best for 1st to 6th Grade (Ages 6 to 13)
This slideshow presentation takes students on a behind-the-scenes tour of the offices of fantasy game company and book publisher, Wizards of the Coast, and then leads them through the process of how A Practical Guide to Monsters came to be. After learning how monsters are designed, students have a chance to design their own monsters, using a worksheet that I will provide. Kids love the slideshow’s pictures, the monsters, and knowing the inside secrets of how books are made. Teachers, librarians, and parents love how the presentation reinforces the steps of the writing process in a fun and engaging way.
Materials Needed: Projection screen, pencils for students, colored pencils/crayons. A digital projector is preferred but I can bring my own if not available. Worksheet will be provided.
Time: The workshop takes anywhere from between 30 and 60 minutes, depending on your time allotment.
Writing and Editing for Children
Audience: Aspiring and Accomplished Children’s Book Authors
I’ve appeared numerous times at various Society of Children’s Books Writers and Illustrators (SCBWI) chapters across the country and I was an instructor in writing for children at the University of Washington in the Writing for Children Certificate Program for five years. I can speak on many different topics from plot to character, to writing series fiction. If you’re interested in having me present to your group, contact me with information about your event and we can discuss what works best for your needs!
